Robert Brevoort Murdock, 80, of 18717 Dover Drive in Hagerstown, Md., died Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at  Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., due to complications following valve replacement surgery.

Born Aug. 4, 1932, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of the late Robert Raymond Murdock and Emily Brevoort Murdock.

A 1950 graduate of West View High School in Pittsburgh, he later graduated from the University of Chicago College in 1952 and from the University of Chicago Law School in 1955. 

Before his retirement in 1994, he was vice president of legal services of the Potomac Edison Co., having served with it and Allegheny Power affiliates for 33 years.

During his career as an attorney, he was a member of the American, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington County bar associations as well as past president of the Maryland/D.C. Public Utilities Association, the Public Utilities Association of The Virginias and the Washington County Bar Association. He also was a past president of the Greater Greensburg Jaycees in Pennsylvania. He was a past vice president of environmental affairs of the Maryland State Chamber of Commerce.

A believer in community service, he was the founding chairman of the Hagerstown Commercial and Industrial Commission, the city’s first economic development endeavor. In addition, he was a past chairman of the Hagerstown Planning Commission and served for 12 years as a trustee of the Washington County Hospital Association. He also was a past member of the Board of Directors of Hagerstown Boys Club and Hagerstown Goodwill and a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, where he was a former trustee and a past chairman of the administrative board.

He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, Fountain Head Country Club, Hagerstown Torch Club, BPO Elks Lodge 378 and PE Forerunners.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Florence (Flossie) Moran Murdock; two sons, Robert B. Murdock Jr. and wife, Dana, of Bedford, N.H., and Thomas Moran Murdock and wife, Melissa, of Eldersburg, Md.; and five grandchildren, Emily and Mary Murdock of Eldersburg, and Adam, Rachel and Grace Murdock of Bedford.

Services will be Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with the Rev. William Warehime officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
