
Charles Newton South, 94, of Williamsport, MD passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Meritus Medical Center Hagerstown, MD.
Born, February 4, 1919 in St. James, Maryland to the late Clarence Andrew South, Sr. and Mary Beatrice Gigeous South. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Frances Brant South in 2001.
He was a 1937 graduate of Williamsport High School and a graduate of the Hayes Combustion Institute with a Diploma in Combustion Engineering. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, he served as a Sergeant in the European Theater of Operations in World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery while serving in the 801st Tank Destroyer Battalion under General George Patton.
He worked for Potomac Edison Company for 42 years. He retired as the Assistant Superintendent of the R. Paul Smith generating station in Williamsport, MD. He was a member of the Potomac Edison Forerunners Club and Potomac Edison Quarter Century Club. He was a former town Councilman for the Town of Williamsport and a former member of the Williamsport Planning and Zoning Board.
Charles was a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church and had served on the Administrative Board (Church Council) and the Board of Trustees. He was also a member of the Methodist Men. He was a member of Potomac Post #202 American Legion Williamsport, MD, Last Man’s Club and VFW Post #1936. Charles was a Charter member of the Williamsport Ambulance Service. He was a member of AARP. He was a former Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #17 of Williamsport, MD.
Survivors include son, C. Christian South and his wife Rebecca of Williamsport, MD;
grandson, C. Christian South, II and his wife Heather of Hagerstown, MD; grandson, John T. South and his wife Jaime of Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington; great grandchildren Carter South, Ireland South, Colin South, Emma South and Riley South and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother Clarence A. “Buck” South, Jr. and a sister Regina South McGuffin.
The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Sunday, December 29, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The funeral home will be open after 1:00 pm on Sunday for the convenience of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Monday, December 30, 2013 at 11:00 am with Rev. Susan Boehl officiating. Military graveside services will be provided by Amvets Post #10 and Marine Corp League of Hagerstown, MD.
