
James William Nicol Sr., 91, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Ravenwood Nursing Care Center, Hagerstown.
Born August 29, 1923, in Braddock, Pa., he was the son of the late James Wilson and Ethel (Sechler) Nicol. In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Margaret L. (Menzie) Nicol; and one sister, Emma Jane Brown Bernstein.
Mr. Nicol was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in Company B 1266th Engineer Combat Battalion as a staff sergeant.
He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He later served as Scoutmaster.
He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor of science degree in accounting and went on to become a certified public accountant.
He was employed by Allegheny Power for 30 years, beginning his career at West Penn Power in Greensburg, Pa., and retiring from Potomac Edison as comptroller in 1988.
Mr. Nicol was a member of LifeHouse Bethel Church and Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, both of Hagerstown. He was also a member of Potomac Edison Forerunners Club
He is survived by five children, James W. Nicol Jr. and wife, Karin, of Hagerstown, Daniel R. Nicol and wife, Marie, of Falling Waters, W.Va. Sally N. Widmeyer and husband, John, of Hagerstown, Jonathan Nicol and wife, Caroline, of Charleston, W.Va., and Suzy L. Nicol and husband, Mike, of Baltimore; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, February 2, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Curt Snyder officiating.
Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Maryland National Guard and local VSO Honor Guards.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.
