
Mrs. Mary Anna (Rhoades) Handley, 89, of Frederick, passed away on May 23, 2016 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born on Sept. 19, 1926 in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Clinton M. & Elizabeth A. (Culler) Rhoades, and the last surviving grandchild of the late Mayor Lloyd C. Culler and Annie M. Culler.
Mary Anna was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend. She was married for nearly 57 years to W. Delphey Handley who passed away in 2005.
She graduated from Frederick High School class of 1943. She attended Miss Willard’s Secretarial School after graduation. She was recruited from there to work for the Army Air Force at the Pentagon from 1943 to1947. She attended Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service for two years during that time. She worked at Fort Detrick from 1948 to 1949 and 1953 to 1955. She was employed at Internal Medicine Associates of Frederick from 1967 until her retirement in 2000. She was the office manager there for many years.
She was a lifelong member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick. She was also a member of the Historical Society of Frederick County, Friends of Baker Park and Friends of Waterford Park. She was a founding member and served on the reunion committee for the FHS Class of ’43. She and her husband were very active with the North End Civic Association for many years.She was a member of the Potomac Edison Forerunners Club
She is survived by a daughter, Betsie Handley and son-in-law Tom Lupp, Frederick; nephews Michael C. Rhoades (Karen), Ocean Pines, MD & Jamie Rhoades (Jean), Middletown, niece Phyllis H. Fisher (Pat), Cumberland, and a brother-in law and his wife Philip and Lois Handley, Cumberland. She is also survived by several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, grandparents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers and their wives, L. Clinton and Mary Jane Rhoades and Charles C. and Darlene Rhoades, all of Frederick.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9pm on Thursday, May 26th, at the Keeney and Basford P.A. Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, where funeral services will be held at 10am on Friday, May 27, with pastor, Dr. Mike O’Donnell, officiating.
Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
