
Fred Lewis Stenger, age 78, of McConnellsburg, PA passed away on Thursday August 10, 2017 at Select Medical Hospital in Harrisburg, PA. Fred was born June 12, 1939 in McConnellsburg, PA, son of the late Max Lewis and the late Ruby O. (Weller) Stenger.
He was a 1957 graduate of the McConnellsburg High School where he was active in the Band, Dance Band, Senior Play, Flashlites Editor, Class Treasurer and Class Vice President. Fred graduated from the Pittsburgh University with a liberal arts degree. He also attained degrees from Penn State University, Washington State University, Clemson University and Hood College.
Fred served in the United States Navy from 1960 until his honorable discharge in 1964. He was stationed in Seattle, Washington and the Aleutian Island on the island of Adak. Fred began his career with West Penn Power Co. in Waynesboro, PA. He later had work assignments in Frederick, MD and Hagerstown, MD. While living in Frederick, MD, he was active in the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, Frederick Arts Council, Frederick Community Concerts, and was instrumental in the creation of the Fredericktowne Players (amateur theatre group). Fred had a love of music and dance, he played trombone in high school under the direction of John Ench and later for the PITT marching band. He was a member of the McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church Choir for several years. He also enjoyed cooking, golf, football, his dog Beau of Calabash, Stein collecting, water, boating, traveling and genealogy which took him to Germany researching the Stenger family.
Fred was active in the McConnellsburg Community as well, participating in the as a member of the McConnellsburg Lion’s Club, an active member in the McConnellsburg Alumni and Friends Association, a member of the McConnellsburg United Methodist Church, a member of the Potomac Edison Forerunners Club and enjoyed helping the Hands and Feet Community Project.
Fred is survived by four siblings, Max Eugene (husband of Dianne) Stenger of McConnellsburg, PA , Jim Stenger of McConnellsburg, PA, Faye (wife of Lynn) Strait of Chambersburg, PA and Michael (husband of Susan) Stenger of McConnellsburg, PA. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Fred also had four special friends in Roger and Sue Barnett and Roger and Faye Elvey, all of McConnellsburg, PA.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Max and Ruby Stenger.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Aug 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Kelso – Cornelius Funeral Home 322 North Second Street, McConnellsburg, PA with the Rev. Neil Ray officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be immediately following the service at Union Cemetery.
