John Joseph (Johnny) Mowen, 85, of Waynesboro, PA, passed away, Monday, September 5, 2022, at his home.

Born Sunday, May 23, 1937 in Clear Spring, MD, he was the son of the late John Edgar Mowen and the late Ruth Cornelia (Hykes) Mowen.

John retired from Potomac Edison and West Penn Power Co. (First Energy) after 40 years of service as a Substation Crew Leader. He was also a member of the Potomac Edison Forerunners Club. John was a member of the original Broadfording Church of the Brethren when at age 32 he rededicated his life to Christ. He was also a founding member of the Brethren Four Quartet, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School youth. At the age of 55, He was licensed to the ministry, preaching his first sermon on November 21, 1971. Over the course of his ministry, John preached in 30 different Church of the Brethren’s and 12 different denominations. He also served as Interim for 15 months for Longmeadow Church of the Brethren and 15 months for Fellowship Church of the Brethren in Martinsburg, WV. He found joy in supporting missions; across Africa, Romania, India, Haiti, Mexico, and the US. John was a member of Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship and the Maugansville Ruritan Club for 29 active years.

He loved sports, hunting, duck pin bowling, and was a 3 time finisher of the JFK 50 Mile Run. John participated and coached in various sport leagues. He was a past secretary and treasurer of the 102-N AFLIO-UWUA. He was also a proud donor for the Red Cross, donating 10 gallons of blood.

He is survived by his wife, whom he married on June 13, 1959, Judy Ann (Snyder) Mowen. He was the brother to Beverly A. Mowen-Hann and Gerald D. Mowen. He was the father of Diane S. Schafferman (David), Andrea J. Branham, and Paddy C. Mowen. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Paul E. Mowen; and sister, Bonnie L. Mielke.

John loved his Lord and Savior, his co-workers, friends, and his fellow ball players. He really loved his wife and his family. 

Services will be held Monday, September 12, 2022 at 11:00 am, at the Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship, 14010 Greencastle Pike, Hagerstown, MD, with the Revs. Leon Witter and Joseph Quesenberry officiating.

Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD, Sunday, September 11, 2022, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the church prior to the service on Monday.

Interment will be at the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, MD.
